Street Artist Ben Eine Donates Work to War Child Charity for Auction at Christie's

A unique customized bicycle
by popular British street artist Ben Eine – whose work was famously
presented to President Barack Obama as an official state present in 2010
by Prime Minister David Cameron – will be auctioned at Christie’s South
Kensington on 6 September 2011. The work, titled ‘Secret’, was donated
by the artist, Moniker Projects and Electra Bicycle Company to the
charity War Child, and all proceeds will benefit the charity. The work
is expected to realize between £2,000 and £3,000 when it is sold as part
of the Interiors sale.
Ben Eine’s celebrity status has
risen considerably in the last five years. He first came to prominence
in the "commercial" graffiti scene through his symbiotic partnership
with London graffiti artist Banksy – through Eine, Banksy was able to
access the underground scene, and through Banksy Eine accessed the
commercial world. His work now features all over the streets of East
London.
After gaining a following on the underground London graffiti scene, Eine worked for cult screen print company Pictures on Walls
before leaving to pursue his own solo career in 2008. His work has
featured in several books on street art, in London’s Time Out magazine,
as well as appearing in music videos for artists including Snow Patrol
and Duffy. He persuaded the shopkeepers on Middlesex Street in
Spitalfields to allow him to repaint their shutters with letters of the
alphabet, gaining him significant media attention. However, Eine’s
biggest claim to fame is having his work TWENTYFIRSTCENTURYCITY chosen
for David Cameron to present to the President on his first official
visit to The White House as Prime Minister. Most recently, Ben Eine’s
work was included in the biggest exhibition of street art to date “Art
in the Streets” at MOCA, Los Angeles (April 2011).
The work, Secret,
for sale at Christie’s on 6th September, was customized by Ben Eine in
his signature-style live at Moniker Art Fair, for which War Child was
the nominated charity. War Child is an international charity that
protects children living in the world's most dangerous war zones.
Currently working in Iraq, Afghanistan, Uganda and D.R. Congo, the
proceeds from the auction of Eine’s work will help to support and
strengthen the protective environment for children who, as a result of
conflict, live with a combination of insecurity, poverty and exclusion.
War Child would like to thank Ben, Moniker Projects and Electra for this
donation.
